Frances Knight
Painting Colour and Light
Frances Knight is a contemporary landscape artist. She likes to paint outside directly from nature to express the effects of light, colour and structure on the landscape. Back in the studio, she works on larger paintings from these studies exploring the dialogue between abstraction and representation; to convey her experience of being in nature, the feeling of expansion and oneness.
"I am not so much interested in rendering the surface qualities of a landscape but in conveying the underlying structure, colour and atmosphere. I like to explore the interaction between the abstract qualities of the two-dimensional painted surface with the illusion of space."
Frances enjoys painting the local Sussex and Hampshire landscapes and travels widely to paint in many different countries. She visits Provence and the Netherlands and has painted in Alsace, Mallorca, Tuscany, India and the USA.
After graduating from Camberwell School of Art, Frances won a Commonwealth and British Council Scholarship to complete her Master of Fine Arts in India. Frances worked as a professional painter for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles' guru, and the Transcendental Meditation organisation, a non-profit charity dedicated to creating world peace, for more than 30 years. She is a certified teacher of Transcendental Meditation and teaches TM courses in Arundel and Brighton. Frances has exhibited her work internationally and widely across the UK, and her paintings are in private collections in the UK, Europe, the USA, Canada and India.
Current work is available at The Little Art Gallery in West Wittering and Arundel Contemporary in Arundel. Frances also hosts a series of open studio days and classes at The Victoria Institute in Arundel.
